This isn’t the Middle Class I Signed Up For
Cal Newport touts the “The Rise of the Internet’s Creator Middle Class” — I’m not so sure
Two weeks ago, the Federal Reserve announced the highest interest rate increase in the last 28 years. Asset owners circled the wagons, and the rest of us collectively held our breath.
It’s time again to plug the leak of the middle class with our fingers.
We’ll wait for the rising waters of inflation and housing costs to subside. Meanwhile, the levy continues to crack.
Today, plenty of people earn a middle-class income, but that income no longer purchases the security or stability of what we think of as the middle-class way of life. Middle-income earners struggle to own homes, pay down debt, and save for retirement.
In a recent New Yorker piece titled “The Rise of the Internet’s Creator Middle Class,” Cal Newport argues that the internet is now fertile territory for earning a middle-class income. No longer does one need to be a full-on celebrity like Kim Kardashian or a viral tastemaker like Charli D’Amelio to make a living wage online. “It’s nice to be able to bask in this moment of potential for the dream of building a new class of digital yeomen,” writes Newport.
